On models with conventional ignition systems, remove distributor.
1. Remove oil pump assembly, refer to Engine/Engine Lubrication/Oil Pump, Engine/Service and Repair .
2. Remove intermediate shaft sprocket and seal, refer to TIMING BELT, SPROCKETS & OIL SEALS.
3. Remove retainer plate attaching screws.
4. Remove retainer.
5. Remove intermediate shaft.
6. Remove intermediate shaft front bushing using tool No. C-4697-2.
7. Remove intermediate shaft rear bushing using tool No. C-4686-2.
8. Measure intermediate shaft, if not within specifications shown in Fig. 34 replace parts as needed.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install rear intermediate shaft bushing using tool No. C-4686-1 until tool is flush with block.
b. Install front intermediate shaft bushing using tool No. C-4697-1 until tool is flush with block.
c. Lubricate distributor drive gear when installing.
d. Apply Form-In-Place gasket material as shown in Fig. 35 and install intermediate shaft retainer.
e. Refer to ``Timing Belt, Sprockets & Oil Seals'' for timing of intermediate shaft.
