W/ Variable Displacement Compressor

Review Safety precautions and Warnings in General Information section of this group. The work area temperature must be 21° to 27°C (70° to 85°F). To test the expansion valve:
1. Connect a suitable charging station or manifold gauge set to the refrigerant system service ports and verify the refrigerant charge level.
2. Remove the right side kick panel trim cover. Locate and disconnect the vacuum lines on the recirculating air door actuator. Connect the dark green line where the light line had been and connect the light green line where the dark green line had been. It could be necessary to use a six inch length of small vacuum tubing to connect the dark green line.
3. Close the passenger compartment.
4a. Set automatic temperature control to A/C, 27°C (85°F), FLOOR, and high blower.
4b. Set heater-A/C control to A/C, full heat, FLOOR, and high blower.
5. Start the engine and hold the idle speed at 1000 rpm. After the engine has reached running temperature, allow the passenger compartment to heat up to create the need for maximum refrigerant flow into the evaporator.
6. If the discharge (high pressure) gauge does not read 965 to 1655 kPa (140 to 240 psi) and the refrigerant charge is sufficient, replace the expansion valve. If the discharge pressure is within the specified range, record the pressure reading.

WARNING: PROTECT SKIN AND EVES FROM CONTACTING DRY ICE, CO2. PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT.

Expansion Valve:

7. Using a super cold substance (dry ice, CO2) freeze the expansion valve control head for 30 seconds. If the compressor discharge pressure does drop by 30% of the pressure recorded in step 6, replace the expansion valve. Allow the expansion valve to thaw, the discharge pressure should stabilize to the pressure recorded in step 6. If the pressure does not stabilize, replace the expansion valve.
