Diagnostic Strategies

Before attempting to diagnose, remove or install any airbag system components, first disconnect and isolate battery ground cable, then wait at least 10 minutes prior the performing any service. Failure to do so may result in airbag deployment or personal injury.

1. Disconnect and isolate battery ground cable, then wait for at least 10 minutes prior to performing service.

2. Remove forward console, if required.

3. Connect DRBII readout tool to ASDM diagnostic 6-way connector, located at RH side of module.

4. From passenger side of vehicle, turn ignition switch to ON position. Exit vehicle with DRBII.

5. Ensure no one is in vehicle, then connect battery ground cable.

6. Read and record any active or stored fault codes.

7. If fault codes are present, refer to DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS. Airbag System

8. Erase stored codes if no active faults are present. If fault remains, code will not erase.

9. With ignition in ON position, ensure no one is inside vehicle.

10. From passenger side of vehicle, turn ignition switch to OFF then ON position, then observe instrument panel airbag warning light. Light should go out after six to eight seconds indicating proper system operation. If airbag warning light fails to light, or goes on and stays on, there is a system fault. Refer to DIAGNOSIS BY TESTING.

To diagnose and test the airbag system, the DRBII readout tool must be connected to the ASDM module, following tool manufacturer's instructions. The 6-way diagnostic connector is located at the RH side of the module.
