General System Operation
The Variable Damping System (VDS), is controlled by the Variable Damping Control Module (VDCM), which operates on battery voltage supplied through the ignition switch. This system uses stand alone diagnostics which can be accessed using a DRB II, or equivalent, diagnostic tester. The vehicle's ride setting is selected by operating one of two switches in the center console. When a new damping position (Soft) is selected, the VDCM will:
1. Sense that the Soft selector switch circuit is grounded.
2. Illuminate the Soft LED.
3. Check the settings of the shocks and struts, via the Position Feedback Sensors (PFS).
4. Drive the motors (inside the shocks and struts) that are not in the selected position, to the selected position.
5. Keep the LED illuminated when all four shocks/struts reach the selected position.
6. Continue to monitor selector switch inputs and PFS inputs for changes.
If a system failure occurs, the Norm LED will flash for approximately one minute, and then go out. The system will then enter the Fault mode. The vehicle can be driven with the VDS system inoperative.
