Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

1. Disarm airbag as described under "Airbag System Disarming."

2. Remove instrument panel center bezel.
3. Remove lower steering column cover as follows:
a. Remove screws along top edge of lower cover, then screws at lower corners of cover.
b. Remove lower cover.
4. Remove left under panel silencer, then set parking brake.

5. Remove console side carpet panels.
6. Position front seats fully forward, then remove rear ashtray.
7. Remove rear lower carpeted end cover, then the nuts holding console to floor bracket.
8. Position front seats fully rearward.
9. Raise console storage bin cover and remove bottom mat, then remove screws holding bottom of storage bin to floor bracket.
10. Remove screws holding console side panels to instrument panel. Disengage hook and loop fasteners and separate side panels from console.
11. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect shift indicator cable and clips from shift mechanism through right side panel opening.
12. On all models, disengage clips holding parking brake lever cover to console, then separate cover from vehicle.
13. Remove center instrument panel bezel as follows:
a. Using a straightedge tool, pry out one end of bezel and continue to disengage six clips along length of bezel. If equipped with message center, disconnect electrical connectors.
14. Remove screws holding console to lower instrument panel, then bolts holding console to forward floor mounting bracket.
15. Remove gear selector knob, then separate console from floor and remove from vehicle.
16. Remove PRNDL clip and cable loop end from post on gear shifter.
17. Remove adjuster from tab on gear shifter bracket by pushing in locking knob on adjuster and sliding adjuster off tab on gear shifter bracket.
18. Remove airbag diagnostic module mounting screws, then slide module out right side of instrument panel center stack area and disconnect module wiring.
19. Remove dimmer module mounting screw at left of steering column, then lower dimmer module.
20. Remove fuse block mounting screws, then lower fuse block.
21. Remove hood release mounting screws, then lower hood release.
22. Remove flasher relay from bracket on center distribution duct.
23. Remove screw from ATC sensor motor assembly, then the sensor from bracket, if equipped.
24. Remove radio ground screw above flasher relay mount.
25. Remove center distribution duct screw from left instrument panel lower brace, then four screws to from left lower brace.
26. Remove five steering column retaining nut, then lower column. Remove two upper column attaching studs.
27. Remove two screws and pull out compact disc player or storage box, then disconnect co-axial cable from disc player.
28. Remove Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) or Traveler from vehicle.
29. Remove radio, ATC, A/C or heater controls.
30. Remove rear window defogger switch by squeezing latches on side of switch.
31. Remove cluster lower trim bezel, switch pod vent grille, speaker grilles and defroster grilles.
32. Remove switch pod assembly as follows:
a. Remove two screws located under panel vent grille, then two screws under pod assembly.
b. Position tilt steering wheel to lowest setting.
c. Slightly pull switch module rearward, the disconnect electrical connectors.
d. Remove switch pod from vehicle.
33. Remove cluster assembly, then dash speakers.
34. Open glovebox door, squeeze side and roll glovebox completely ope, then remove glovebox light switch and disconnect wires.
35. Loosen right cowl side pivot bolt through glovebox opening, the close glovebox.
36. Loosen left cowl side pivot.
37. Remove four screw attachments at top of instrument panel, then roll panel out.
38. Pull wiring, antenna cable, A/C cable and vacuum lines out of instrument panel.
39. Disconnect demister hose and remove instrument panel with ducts attached.
40. Reverse procedure to install. If new instrument panel is to be installed, transfer ducts and brackets onto new panel.
41. Install PRNDL cable as follows:
a. Place gear shifter in low position.

b. Insert cable into adjuster, then line up cable up with end of adjuster.
c. Check gear selector indicator for proper alignment.
d. Attach PRNDL clip to adjuster to secure cable.
