Transfer Shaft Bearing




Install Transfer Shaft Bearing Cone:




Install Bearing Cup To Shaft:




Install Transfer Shaft:




Install Transfer Shaft Bearing Snap:




Install Transfer Shaft Bearing Cup Into Retainer:




Install Bearing Cup Retainer:




Install Transfer Gear Bearing Cone:






1. Install a 4.66 mm (0.184 inch) gauging shim on the transfer shaft.
2. Install transfer shaft gear and bearing assembly and torque the nut to 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.).
3. To measure bearing end play:
- Attach Tool L-4432, or equivalent to the transfer gear.
- Mount a steel ball with grease into the end of the transfer shaft.
- Push and pull the gear while rotating back and forth to insure seating of the bearing rollers.
- Using a dial indicator, measure transfer shaft end play.





4. Refer to the Transfer Bearing Shim Chart illustrated for the required shim combination to obtain the proper bearing setting.
5. Use Tool 6259, or equivalent to remove the retaining nut and washer. Remove the transfer shaft gear using Tool L-4407, or equivalent.

6. Remove the gauging shim and install the correct shim. Install the transfer gear ant bearing assembly.

CAUTION: Original retaining nut may not be reused. Always use a new retaining nut when reassembling.

Tighten Nut To 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.):





7. Install the new retaining nut and washer and torque to 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.). Measure transfer shaft end play, end play should be 0.05 to 0.10 mm (0.002 to 0.004 inch).
8. Measure bearing end play as outlined in Step 3. End play should be between 0.05 mm and 0.10 mm (0.002 to 0.004 inch).

NOTE: If end play is too high, install a 0.04 mm (0.0016 inch) thinner shim. If end play is too low, install a 0.04 mm (0.0016 inch) thicker shim combination. Repeat until 0.05 to 0.10 mm (0.002 to 0.004 inch) end play is obtained.

Install Rear Cover:




Install Rear Cover Bolts:




Install Low/Reverse Clutch Pack:




Install Low/Reverse Reaction Plate Snap Ring:




Install One Disc:




Install Low/Reverse Reaction Plate:






NOTE: 1998 Transaxles have a stopped Low/Reverse Reaction Plate. Install plate step side up.

Tapered Snap Ring Instructions:

Check Low/Reverse Clutch Clearance:





Press down clutch pack with finger and zero dial indicator. Low/Reverse clutch pack clearance is 0.89 to 1.04 (0.035 to 0.042 inch).





Select the proper low/reverse reaction plate to achieve specifications:

Install 2/4 Clutch Pack:




Stagger 2/4 Clutch Plate Pads:




Install 2/4 Clutch Return Spring:

Install 2/4 Clutch Retainer:






NOTE: When installing the 2-4 clutch plates and discs, the orientation should be alternated so the pilot pads of adjacent plates do not align, refer to image.

Install 2/4 Clutch Retainer Snap Ring:




Check 2/4 Clutch Clearance:






NOTE: Verify that Miller Tool 5058, or equivalent is centered properly to the 2/4 clutch retainer before depressing the tool.

Install Rear Sun Gear:




Install Front Carrier And Rear Annulus Assembly:




Install Front Sun Gear Assembly:





Press down clutch pack with finger and zero dial indicator. The 2/4 clutch pack clearance is 0.76 to 2.64mm (0.030 to 0.104 inch). If not within specifications, the clutch is not assembled properly. There is no adjustment for the 2/4 clutch clearance.
