Cowl Screen - Whistle Noise

NO: 23-51-96

GROUP: Body

DATE: Aug. 30, 1996

SUBJECT:

Cowl Screen
Whistle Noise

MODELS:

1995 - 1996 (JA) Breeze/Cirrus/Stratus

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Cowl screen whistle noise while driving at low to moderate speed (25 to 50 mph) when the climate control setting is placed in the fresh air mode.

DIAGNOSIS:

Verify the whistle noise by driving the vehicle at speeds of 25 to 50 mph in various directions. During the test drive, it is important to keep a clean air flow path in front of the vehicle. Driving in heavy traffic or close behind another vehicle will disrupt the air flow and may prevent the whistle from occurring.

To confirm the whistle is due to the cowl screen, place the climate control setting to the full "REC" position or place tape over the fresh air inlet on the exterior surface of the cowl screen. Place the A/C blower switch in the off or low speed position. The whistle noise should become diminished or completely eliminated during driving. If the whistle noise is diminished or eliminated perform the Repair Procedure.
