Hood Hard to Close

MODELS:
1995 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Hood hard to close (latch).

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4646856 Latch, Hood

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing and adjusting the hood latch assembly.

1. Open the hood. Remove the top grill fasteners on Chrysler model only.
2. Remove the hood latch.
3. Close the hood and check the gaps and flushness to the fender.
4. Open the hood and adjust the hood or fenders as necessary to align the hood to the fender opening. Torque the hood hinge bolts to 250 in. lbs. and fender bolts to 75 in. lbs.
5. Open the hood and install the hood latch in the full upward adjusted position and snug the attaching bolts.
6. Close the hood until the striker engages the secondary catch and check to make sure the latch is centered to the striker. Loosen the attaching nuts and center the latch to the striker if necessary.

NOTE:
THE LATCH MUST BE CENTERED TO THE STRIKER OR DAMAGE TO THE LATCH WILL RESULT.

7. Tighten the latch attaching nuts to 250 in. lbs.
8. Lift the hood about six inches and drop it to check that the hood latches properly. The hood should engage on the primary catch when dropped at a height of no more than six inches. If hood does not close properly adjust upper radiator crossmember up and repeat procedure. To adjust the upper radiator crossmember upward, loosen the two brace bolts located inboard of the crossmember mounting bolts, pull up on the center of the crossmember, and tighten the brace bolts to 250 in. lbs.
9. Check the gap to the facia. If the gap is excessive, adjust the latch down. This can be done with the hood in the closed position.
10. Repeat step 8 as necessary.
11. Install the grill on the Chrysler model.
