Ignition Switch - Air Bag Lamp ON/Systems Inoperative

SUBJECT:
Intermittent Air Bag Light Illumination, and Inoperative Electrical Components Following Engine Start-Up

MODELS:
1995 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Intermittently the air bag light remains illuminated, and the power windows, radio, turn signals, wipers, and climate control are inoperative following engine start-up.

DIAGNOSIS:
Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds to gain access to ignition switch and ignition key cylinder. Inspect ignition switch date code and replace if it was built before date code 3344 (334th day of 1994). Remove and inspect ignition key cylinder. Replace it if cylinder is lubricated with a white/cream grease. The current cylinders are lubricated with red grease (Mobiltemp, SCH-32).

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4685256 Switch, Ignition (Date Code 3344 or Later)
1 4746666 Cylinder, Ignition Key
AR NPN Red Grease (Mobiltemp, SCH-32)*

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the ignition switch and ignition key cylinder.

1. Record radio settings and disconnect negative battery cable from auxiliary jumper terminal.

2. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds.

3. Remove screws holding multi-function switch to lock housing.

4. Place key in the run position. Depress lock cylinder retaining tab and remove key cylinder.

5. Disconnect electrical connectors from ignition switch.

6. Remove ignition switch mounting screw with a # 10 Torx tamper proof bit.

7. Depress retaining tabs and pull ignition switch from steering column.

8. Ensure that the new ignition switch is in the RUN position and the actuator shaft in the lock housing is in the RUN position.

9. Carefully install the ignition switch. The switch will snap over the retaining tabs. Install mounting screw.

10. Install electrical connectors to ignition switch.

11. Lubricate key cylinder with Mobiltemp SCH-32 red grease. Install key cylinder (cylinder retaining tab will depress only in the RUN position).

12. Install upper and lower shrouds.

13. Connect negative battery cable and set clock and radio stations.

14. Check for proper operation of ignition switch and key-in warning switch.
