Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Repair Procedure

1. Disconnect the center seat belt by pressing the square button on the lower center quick latch and pulling on the seat belt (Fig. 2).

2. Fold the right rear seat back down.

3. For early-built vehicles that have push pins attaching the seat back cover (Fig. 3), remove the seat back as follows. For vehicles without seat back push pins, continue with Step 4.

a. Remove the two child seat tether anchor trim bezels.

b. Remove the seat back latch trim bezel.

c. Carefully remove the 11 seat back panel push pins.

d. Remove the seat back cover.

e. Using a T-40 Torx bit remove the four (4) seat back pivot bolts (Fig. 4).

f. Remove the seat back and set it aside.

g. Continue with Step 5.

4. For vehicles without seat back push pins, remove the seat back as shown.

a. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, working from the outboard to the inboard side of the seat, remove the arrow portion of the trim to open the rear flap on the lower rear seat back carpet close-out (Fig. 5). Use care to not damage or cut the seat trim.

b. Open the outboard carpet Velcro closure and remove the upper carpet close out J-Channel from the frame channel (Fig. 6). If the black plastic edge protector on the seat frame is pulled off during J-channel removal, then reattach it to the frame using a rubber mallet.

c. Remove the four plastic push pins from the hardboard seat backing (Fig 7).

d. Carefully lift the lower part of the hardboard backing and then using a T-40 Torx socket, remove the four (4) rear seat back frame-to-pivot bolts.

e. Slide the outboard side of the rear seatback forward, rotate it up and to the driver's side and then lean the seat back against the other seat back to provide access to the child seat anchor wire (Fig. 8).

5. Place a cover or a clean shop towel over the seat cushion and under the anchor wire to protect the seat cover.

NOTE:
CLEANING MILLER SPECIAL TOOL # 9066: KEEPING THE SPECIAL CUTTING TOOL CLEAN IS CRITICAL. IF THE CUTTING SURFACE IS NOT CLEANED FREQUENTLY, PAINT AND METAL SHAVING WILL BUILD UP IN THE GROOVES OF THE CUTTING TOOL AND DIMINISH THE CUTTING EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TOOL. USE MOPAR BRAKE CLEANER AND/OR COMPRESSED AIR TO CLEAN THE TOOL.

6. Back the anchor resizing tool (Special Tool # 9066) adjustment screw off about 2-3 turns (counter clockwise) from the fully closed position so that the jaws are open.

7. Position and clamp the resizing tool on the outboard side of the anchor wire as shown in (Fig. 9).

8. Tighten the resizing tool adjustment screw until the cutter surface is in full contact with the anchor wire.

NOTE:
REMOVE A SMALL AMOUNT OF MATERIAL AT EACH RESIZING STEP: ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE TOO MUCH MATERIAL FROM THE ANCHOR WIRE DURING A RESIZING STEP CAN INCREASE THE EFFORT REQUIRED TO ROTATE THE CUTTING TOOL. DOING THIS WITH A TOOL THAT HAS NOT BEEN CLEANED FURTHER INCREASES TOOL ROTATION EFFORT. THE INCREASED TOOL ROTATION EFFORT FROM EITHER OR BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE ANCHOR WIRE TO BEND, TWIST AND/OR BREAK.

WARNING:
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SPECIAL TOOL. TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW A MAXIMUM OF 1/8 TURN AFTER THE CUTTING JAWS CONTACT THE ANCHOR WIRE.

WARNING:
DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE TO ROTATE THE CUTTING TOOL. IF THE TOOL IS DIFFICULT TO ROTATE, UNCLAMP THE TOOL, CLEAN ANY DEBRIS FROM THE GROOVES OF THE TOOL AND BACK OFF THE TOOL ADJUSTMENT SCREW. THE TOOL DOES NOT CUT EFFECTIVELY IF IT IS CLAMPED TOO TIGHT.

9. Cycle the tool in a rotary direction as far as possible (approximately 180°) (Fig. 10), back and forth around the wire until the effort to move the tool is significantly reduced (about 10-15 times).

NOTE:
THE BEST AND FASTEST WAY TO OBTAIN 180 DEGREES OF TOOL TRAVEL IS TO REMOVE THE SEAT BACK AS DESCRIBED IN THE REPAIR PROCEDURE.

WARNING:
DO NOT SIDE LOAD THE TOOL AS THIS CAN DAMAGE THE CUTTING SURFACE.

10. Unclamp and remove the tool from the anchor wire and clean out any shavings from the cutter surfaces.

11. Tighten the tool adjustment screw about 1/8 turn.

12. Reinstall the tool on the wire and cycle the tool again in a rotary direction as far as possible, back and forth around the wire until the effort to move the tool is significantly reduced (about 10-15 times).

WARNING:
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SPECIAL TOOL. TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW A MAXIMUM OF 1/8 TURN AFTER THE CUTTING JAWS CONTACT THE ANCHOR WIRE.

13. Unclamp and remove the tool from the wire and clean any shavings from the cutter blades.

CAUTION:
THE CUTTER SURFACE CAN BECOME HOT TO THE TOUCH.

14. Check the diameter of the wire at several positions around the wire to ensure it is properly rounded, using the GO/NO-GO gauge on the tool.

15. If the gauge fits, continue with Step 16. If the gauge does not fit, repeat Steps 11-14.

16. Repeat Steps 6-15 for the other side of the same anchor wire.

CAUTION:
WHEN POSITIONING THE TOOL ON THE INBOARD SIDE OF THE ANCHOR WIRE, BE SURE TO LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE TOOL TO CLEAR THE SUPPORT ATTACHED TO THE INSIDE OF THE ANCHOR WIRE. IF THE TOOL IS IMPROPERLY POSITIONED, THE TOOL CAN BIND ON THE TOP OF THE SUPPORT WIRE. CONTINUING TO ROTATE THE TOOL AFTER CONTACT MAY CAUSE THE ANCHOR WIRE TO BEND, TWIST AND/OR BREAK.

ALIGN THE EDGE OF THE RESIZING TOOL WITH THE INBOARD SIDE OF THE SUPPORT STRAP ON THE ANCHOR WIRE. (Fig. 11)

17. Remove the seat cover and vacuum any debris from the seat and vehicle as necessary.

18. Using a damp rag, clean the anchor wire.

19. Dry the anchor wire with a dry cloth.

20. Apply BLACK Mopar Touch-Up Paint (P/N 04342250) to the anchor wire. Let the paint dry until it is dry to the touch (about 3 minutes).

21. For vehicles that have push pins attaching the seat back cover, install the seat back as follows. For vehicles without seat back push pins, continue with Step 22.

a. Place the seat back into position on the seat.

b. Using a T-40 Torx bit, install the four (4) seat back pivot bolts (Fig. 4). Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).

c. Install the seat back cover.

d. Install the 11 seat back panel push pins (Fig. 3) New push pins (P/N 05102984AA) can be ordered if any of the push pins were damaged and require replacement.

e. Install the seat back latch trim bezel.

f. Install the two child seat tether anchor trim bezels.

g. Continue with Step 23.

22. For vehicles without seat back push pins, install the seat back as follows.

a. Return the seat back to the folded position. Slide the pivot brackets between the steel seat back frame and the hardboard panel. Do NOT reassemble the seat back with the pivot bracket outside of the hardboard panel.

b. Install the four (4) seat back mounting bolts. Install the upper outboard bolt first and then install the lower outboard bolt. Next, install the lower inboard bolt and then the upper inboard bolt. Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).

c. Install the four push pins to secure the hardboard panel (Fig. 7).

d. Install the carpet flap by securing the outer edge with the Velcro strips and then inserting the J-channel into the mating frame channel (Fig. 6). Use a flat-blade screwdriver and work from the outboard side to the inboard side of the seat.

e. Working from the outboard to the inboard side of the seat, insert the lower carpet closeout arrow into the J-channel (Fig. 5).

23. Return the seat back to the upright position and lock the seat back latch.

24. Connect the center seat belt to the center quick latch (Fig. 12). Route the center seat belt so that the label is visible and then rotate the anchor to the drivers side of the vehicle and engage it into the quick latch. A "click" sound will be heard when the latch is engaged. Pull back on the belt to ensure that the latch is fully engaged.
