Accessory Drive Belt Squeaking/Chirping Sound
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves aligning the power steering pulley flush with the power steering pump shaft.
MODELS:
2003 - 2004 (PT) PT Cruiser
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.4L and 2.4L Turbo engine (sales code EDT, EDV and EDZ) built on or before September 11, 2003.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
This condition can be caused by the power steering pulley being pressed too far on to the power steering pump shaft. If the pulley is 0.4 mm or more from the end of the power steering pump shaft this condition exists.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the vehicle operator describes or the technician experiences the Symptom/Condition, perform the Repair Procedure.
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual in Section 0 - LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE/HOISTING - STANDARD PROCEDURE for detailed instructions.
2. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual in Section 22 - TIRES/WHEELS - REMOVAL - TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY for detailed instructions.
3. Remove push-in fasteners attaching splash shield to frame rail forward of suspension (Fig. 1).
4. Remove three lower front screws attaching wheelhouse splash shield to front fascia.
5. Relocate splash shield out of work area.
6. Remove four nuts attaching right headlamp housing (Fig. 2).
7. Remove right headlamp housing by lowering the right side of the fascia as necessary.
8. Disconnect wire connector from the headlamp housing (Fig. 2).
9. Install Matco MST93 puller tool, or equivalent, on the steering pump pulley through the headlamp opening. Tighten the puller screw drive until the pulley is flush with the power steering pump shaft (Fig. 3).
10. Reinstall right headlamp housing.
11. Reinstall right splash shield.
12. Reinstall the right front tire and wheel assembly.
