Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS), NEVER REPLACE BOTH THE OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER (ORC) AND THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION MODULE (OCM) AT THE SAME TIME. IF BOTH REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, REPLACE THE OCM FIRST. THEN PERFORM THE AIRBAG SYSTEM TEST INCLUDING AN IGNITION-ON TIME OF AT LEAST ONE MINUTE BEFORE REPLACING THE ORC. BOTH THE ORC AND THE OCM STORE OCS CALIBRATION DATA, WHICH THEY TRANSFER TO ONE ANOTHER DURING THE FIRST MINUTE OF IGNITION-ON TIME AFTER ONE OF THEM IS REPLACED. IF BOTH MODULES ARE REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME, AN IRREVERSIBLE FAULT WILL BE SET IN BOTH MODULES.REMOVAL
1. Open hood, disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
WARNING: WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM RESERVE CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE BEGINNING ANY AIRBAG SYSTEM OR COMPONENT SERVICE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
2. Wait two minutes for the system reserve capacitor to discharge before beginning any system or component service.
Front Floor Console:
3. Remove the left and right forward console closeout panels.
ORC Connectors:
4. From the right side of the vehicle, disconnect the two ORC electrical connectors.
5. Remove the three retaining screws to the ORC. One on the left side of the floor tunnel, and one in front of (toward bulkhead) and behind (toward vehicle rear) the ORC unit.
6. Remove ORC from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. Position ORC in vehicle.
ORC - Remove/Install:
2. Install the three retaining screws to the ORC. One on the left side of the floor tunnel, and one in front of (toward bulkhead) and behind (toward vehicle rear) the ORC unit. Torque screws to 14.5 N.m (128 in. lbs.).
3. From the right side of the vehicle, connect the two ORC electrical connectors.
4. Install the left and right forward console closeout panels.
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE. FIRST. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN OCCUPANT PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
5. Verify vehicle and system operation.
6. Close hood.
