Electronic Pedestrian Protection Hood Hinge Actuator - Removal
REMOVAL
WARNING:
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with the Electronic Pedestrian Protection (EPP) system, disable the system before attempting any EPP system component diagnosis or service. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the EPP system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental active hood hinge actuator deployment.
NOTE:
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged Electronic Pedestrian Protection (EPP) system active hood hinge actuator. If the actuator is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, it should be handled in the same manner as is used when handling non-deployed supplemental restraints. Review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Service and Repair . If the actuator has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Pedestrian Protection Deployment before removing the unit from the vehicle. Service and Repair .
1. With the status of the ignition switch Off, disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
2. Remove the splash shield from the right or left front wheel house. Splash Shield - Removal.
3. Reach through the back of the front wheel house opening to remove the stuffer pad from between the fender and the cowl side outer panel.
4. Disconnect the pigtail wire connector (3) of the Electronic Pedestrian Protection (EPP) active hood hinge actuator (2) from the headlamp and dash wire harness connector (4) on the outside of the cowl side outer panel.
5. Disengage the actuator pigtail wire (4) from the retention feature on the outboard rear corner of the hinge lower bracket (1) and pull the pigtail wire connector out from between the hinge and the cowl plenum.
6. Remove the screw (3) that secures the actuator (2) bracket to the mount (4) at the back of the hood hinge lower bracket.
7. Remove the actuator from the vehicle.
