The existing alternator belt adjustment procedure has been revised..
Reference: 1983 Front Wheel Drive Supplement publication #81-270-3003A, pages 7-2 and 7-3.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
The following procedure should be used when replacing or adjusting the alternator/water pump belt (Figure 1).
1. Loosen alternator pivot bolt "E".
2. Loosen adjusting lock nut "D".
3. If belt replacement is necessary, loosen adjusting bolt "F". (To replace belt, first remove air pump belt. Refer to service manual procedure for "Air Pump Belt.")
4. Remove old belt and/or install new belt.
5. Tighten adjusting screw "F" until belt tension reaches:
Gauge Deflection
New Belt 95 lbs.* 1/4 in. (5.892 mm)
Used Belt** 70 lbs.* 5/16 in. (7.366 mm)
6. Torque pivot bolt "E" to 40 foot pounds (54 N-m).
7. Torque adjusting lock nut "D" to 250 inch pounds (28 N-m).
NOTE: SINCE THIS PROCEDURE TIGHTENS PIVOT BOLT "E" AFTER ADJUSTING SCREW "F", A BELT TENSION GAIN RESULTS. THE FINAL TENSION SHOULD BE:
Gauge Deflection
New Belt 115 lbs.* 3/16 in. (4.878 mm)
Used Belt** 90 lbs.* 1/4 in. (5.892 mm)
*Use a Poly-V Burroughs gauge.
**A belt is considered "used" after 15 minutes of running.
Please make the appropriate changes in your service manual supplement publication #81-270-3033A, pages 7-2 and 7-3 for future use.
