SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A condition may exist on subject model vehicles with a carburetor build date prior to December 21, 1983 (a Julian date code will be metal stamped on the left side of the fuel bowl casting, i.e., 3553 = 355 day of 1983) of engine sag (hesitation) on light acceleration, which is especially noticeable when turning.

Vehicle will accelerate normally during heavy acceleration type driving.

This condition may be caused by a slight bind in the accelerator pump system, which does not allow a complete pump fuel shot during light accelerations. This condition can be verified by looking in the carburetor air horn and observing the accelerator pump fuel discharge while slowly opening the throttle. If two strong streams of fuel are observed the accelerator pump linkage is OK. If discharge is intermittent or very weak proceed with this service.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove accelerator pump linkage cover plate.

2. Note direction of the "U" link holding the accelerator pump shaft to actuator lever. This "U" link will be reversed during reassembly (Figure 1).

3. Remove carburetor air horn and accelerator pump assembly using service manual procedure.

4. Drill through the accelerator pump shaft hole in the air horn using a 7/32" bit (Figure 1).

5. Grind .050" from the lower end of "U" link (Figure 1).
6. Reassemble accelerator pump assembly in the air horn with the "U" link reversed.

7. Reinstall cover plate and air cleaner assembly. Check idle speed, reset if necessary.
