Fuel Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 91 Control relay terminal identification. 4-97.4/1.6L:

1. Check voltage between control relay terminals 4 and 5, Fig. 91, with relay coil energized and not energized. To energize coils, apply battery voltage across terminals 8 and 10. With relay coils energized, 12 volts should be indicated at terminals 4 and 5. With relay coils de-energized, 0 volts should be indicated at terminals 4 and 5.
2. Check for continuity between control relay terminals 2 and 3, Fig. 91, with battery voltage applied to terminals 6 and 9. With voltage applied, continuity should be indicated at terminals 2 and 3. With voltage removed, no continuity should be indicated at terminals 2 and 3.
3. Check for voltage between control relay terminal 2 and ground, Fig. 91, with battery voltage applied to terminals 3 and 7. With voltage applied, 12 volts should be indicated between terminals 2 and ground. With voltage removed, 0 volts should be indicated between terminals 2 and ground.
4. If test results are not satisfactory, replace control relay.
