4 Ignition Control For Fault & Circuit Defects

Perform No Start Test 1, before proceeding.
1. Connect a diagnostic readout box to engine harness connector, then turn ignition switch to Run position.
2. If display has a blank screen or shows a `` No Response,'' go to Obtaining Fault or Messages section.
3. If display does not have a blank screen or shows a `` No Response,'' with diagnostic readout box select ``Read Fault Data'' and record fault messages.
4. Select ``Erase Fault Data'' and erase faults, crank engine for seven seconds, then select ``Read Fault Data'' and record fault messages.
5. If fault condition is ``Ignition Control CKT,'' proceed as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch Off and disconnect the diagnostic readout box.
b. Disconnect ignition coil wire at distributor cap and put the coil wire near a good ground.
c. Disconnect 60-way connector at the SMEC, inspect connector for damage.
d. Connect a jumper wire from cavity 58 of the 60-way connector to ground, then connect a lead from a remote start switch to cavity 34 of 60-way connector and connect second lead of starter switch to battery negative terminal.
e. Turn ignition switch to On position.
f. Rapidly press and release the remote starter button several times, check the ignition coil for a spark.
g. If there is a good spark from the coil wire, replace SMEC, then proceed to Test 17.
h. If there is not a good spark from the coil wire, turn ignition switch Off and disconnect 14-way connector from the SMEC.
i. Connect an ohmmeter between cavity 34 of the 60-way connecter and cavity 13 of the 14-way connector.
j. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC.
k. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair the yellow wire for an open circuit between 60 and 14-way connectors, then proceed to Test 17.
6. If fault condition is not ``Ignition Control CKT,'' proceed to Test 5.
