12 Distributor Pickup & Connecting Circuits

1. Turn ignition switch Off then disconnect distributor harness connector. Inspect both halves of connector for damage and repair if necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
2. If no terminals were damaged, remove coil wire from distributor and place 1/4 from a ground, then turn ignition switch to Run position.
3. Place a jumper from the gray/black to black/light brown harness connector. Make and break jumper while watching for sparks from coil wire.
4. If there are sparks from coil wire, remove jumper, then put diagnostic read-out tool in voltage mode, then proceed to step 5. If there are no sparks from the coil wire, proceed to step 9.
5. Check voltage on the orange wire at the distributor harness connector. If voltage is reading at least 7 volts proceed to step 6. If the voltage is less than 7 volts, proceed to step 8.
6. Check that distributor rotates to insure no mechanical problems prior to replacing pick-up.
7. Replace distributor pickup, then proceed to Test 16.
8. Repair orange wire from distributor connector for an open to harness, then proceed to Test 16.
9. Remove jumper, put the ignition in the Run position, then go to ``Read Voltage'' with the diagnostic read-out tool.
10. Touch volt probe to gray/black wire at distributor.
11. If voltage is at least 4 volts, proceed to step 12. If voltage is less than 4 volts, proceed to step 15.
12. Turn ignition Off, put diagnostic read-out tool into ohms mode, then touch probe to black/light brown wire at distributor.
13. If the ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC, then proceed to Test 16.
14. If the ohmmeter does not show continuity, repair the black/light brown wire for an open from the distributor connector to main harness, then proceed to Test 16.
15. If voltage is less than 4 volts, turn the ignition switch Off, disconnect the 60-way from the SMEC, then inspect terminal for damage.
16. Switch diagnostic read-out tool to ohms mode, then connect first lead to terminal No. 47 of the 60-way connector. Connect second lead to terminal No. 3 of the distributor pickup connector.
17. If the ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC, then proceed to Test 16.
18. If the ohmmeter does not show continuity, repair the gray/black wire for an open circuit between the distributor and 60-way connectors.
