SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Repetitive blowing of fuses.

DIAGNOSIS

Inspect the 25-way steering column connector. The J-25 (18 YL/RD) wire must be in cavity 25 of the 25-way connector. If it is not, the following repair procedure must be performed.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

If repetitive blowing of fuse #16 on 1988 C-body or fuse #2 on early built 1989 C-body cars should occur, the problem may be due to the ignition key lamp mounting screw being grounded to the gearshift lever by things such as a large key ring. To prevent this from reoccurring, the circuits routed to the key lamp should be reversed at the steering column 25-way connector.

1. Unhook the negative battery cable.

2. Disconnect the ignition key lamp two-way connector from the 25-way steering column connector. This 25-way connector is mounted to the instrument panel just to the left of the steering column. This 25-way connector is illustrated on page 8F-96 of the 1988 Wiring Diagrams Service Manual and on page 8F-124 of the 1989 Wiring Diagram Service Manual.

3. For 1988 Model Cars

Remove the J-25 (18 YL/RD) terminal from cavity #24 of the steering column connector and remove the D3B (18 PK/DB) terminal from cavity #25 of the steering column connector. Then reinstall the J-25 (18 YL/RD) into cavity #25 of the steering column connector and reinstall the D3B (18 PK/DB) terminal into cavity #24 of the steering column connector. See Figure 1.

4. For 1989 Model Cars

Remove the J-25 (18 YL/RD) terminal from cavity #24 of the steering column connector and remove the M-lE (18 PK) terminal from cavity #25 of the steering column connector. Then reinstall the J-25 (18 YL/RD) terminal into cavity #25 of the steering column connector and reinstall the M-1E (18 PK) terminal into cavity #24 of the steering column connector. See Figure 2.
5. Reconnect the two-way ignition key lamp connector to the 25-way steering column connector.

6. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

7. Check for normal operation of the ignition key lamp.
