REVISED DEALER SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS SAFETY RECALL # 314T -- FRONT SEAT BELTS

^ REVISION -- When assembling the reinforcement to the strap, a flat washer must be installed on the mounting bolt between the buckle strap and supplied rubber grommet. This will ensure that the grommet is compressed enough to support the belt in the upright position.

^ The rivet in the reinforcement plate is not supposed to engage in the seat frame hole when the belt is reinstalled. The rivet is only an assembly aid to hold the reinforcement plate in place. It is not an anti-rotational device.

^ When the service is completed, the reinstalled belt assembly must be free to rotate fore and aft if it is loaded, but it should not flop freely.

^ REVISION -- This recall service requirement applies only to 1989 and the first half of the 1990 model year (built through January, 1990) AS Body vehicles (Caravan, Grand Caravan, Caravan C/V, Voyager, Grand Voyager and 1990 Town & Country). 1989 Grand Caravan and Grand Voyager vehicles equipped with the eight passenger seating option (front bench seat) do not require this service.

To repair a vehicle with a damaged (see inspection procedure) belt buckle strap, a new seat belt buckle assembly must be ordered and installed. The new belt assembly is of a revised construction and does not require a reinforcement plate at the mounting location.

Recall parts are being billed to involved dealers in accordance with the recently announced Recall Parts Pricing policy.

A limited quantity of seat belt reinforcement plate packages (equivalent to 25 % of involved vehicles), was distributed initially to all involved dealers. As this quantity will be only a portion of the total parts requirement, dealers must order additional parts as needed to support customer demand.

Owner notifications for this recall are being mailed in stages as sufficient parts for each stage are received.
