Recall - VECI Label Defective: Overview

No. 514-6-7
June, 1992

To:
All Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers

Subject:
California Emissions Recalls # 514, # 516 & # 517 VECI Label Replacement

Models:
The Following 1990 & 1991 Model Year Vehicles With California Emission Control Systems:

^ Recall # 514: 1990 Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow (AP-Body) Equipped With a 2.2L Engine and Built After January 1, 1990

^ Recall # 516: 1990 Plymouth Horizon and Dodge Omni (AL-Body) Equipped With a 2.2L Engine and Built After January 1; 1990

^ 1991 Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow (AP-Body) Equipped With a 2.2L Engine and Built Through February 28, 1991

Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) labels installed on the listed vehicles contain an error. The State of California Emission Control System Bar Code on the labels incorrectly identifies 2.2L engines as 2.5L and 3.3L engines as 3.8L.

The bar code identifies the engine family and emission system configuration for the purpose of emission testing of vehicles. The incorrect labels may cause vehicle owners to wrongly fail the emission tests. To correct the condition, new VECI labels must be installed.

Three different VECI labels are involved depending on vehicle model, engine and build date. For administrative purposes, three separate recall numbers have been assigned as listed above.

Note:
Three other recalls (# 518, 519, & 520) have already been implemented in June, 1992 for this VECI label replacement requirement.

Replacement labels themselves or, if preferred, to arrange for dealer installation of the owner-supplied labels without charge.
