Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Power Window Motor: Testing and Inspection

To test an individual window motor:
1. Remove the door trim panel(s) to gain access to the window motor.
2. Disconnect the window motor wire connector.
3. Using a test battery, connect a jumper wire between the positive terminal of the battery and one of the window motor terminals. Using a second jumper wire, momentarily connect the other window motor terminal to the negative terminal. The motor should now rotate causing the window to go either up or down.[1]
4. Reverseing the battery leads to the opposite terminals should make the window move in the opposite direction.
Check for smooth window operation through the entire window travel. If the window does not move, remove the window motor for further testing and/or repairs. If the window does move but not smoothly, check for a binding window track or regulator.

Remarks

[1] If the window is already in either the full up or full down positions, it will not move any further in that direction.
