SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles equipped with Bendix ABS, may exhibit a condition where the brake pedal may not return to its fully released position. As a result, the rear stop lamps remain illuminated when the brake pedal has been released or the speed control may be inoperative.

DIAGNOSIS:

Verify that the stop lamp switch is properly adjusted as outlined in the appropriate service manual. Ensure that the accumulator is fully charged, by pumping the brake pedal (with the ignition key ON) until the pump comes on, then allow it to fully charge the accumulator. Depress the brake pedal and slowly release it. Verify that the brake pedal does return to the fully released position, by pulling up on the pedal and verify that the rear stop lamps go out. If the rear stop lamps do go out when pulling up on the pedal, proceed with the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves installation of a brake pedal return spring.

1. Remove the under dash silencer pad to expose the brake pedal and bracket assembly.

2. Remove and discard the hydraulic assembly push rod pin clip and direct the push rod free from the brake pedal.

3. Remove and discard the pedal shaft nut and remove the pedal shaft. For AC/AY only - remove the stop lamp switch, leaving the mounting bracket in place.

NOTE:
THE NUT SECURING THE PEDAL PIVOT PIN (OR SHAFT) AND THE INPUT ROD RETAINING CLIP ARE SPECIALLY FORMED AND SHOULD NOT BE REUSED. USE THE NEW COMPONENTS SHIPPED IN THE KIT DURING PEDAL INSTALLATION.

4. Lubricate inside and around the coils of the pedal return spring using Mopar Multipurpose Grease, PN 4318063 or equivalent, and install pedal return spring to pivot, for AC and AY Bodies see Figure 1 - for AS Body see Figure
2. (A TIE WRAP SECURED AROUND THE FREE LEG OF THE SPRING AND THE BRAKE PEDAL STRIKER PLATE MAY BE USED TO PRELOAD THE SPRING FOR EASIER INSTALLATION).

5. Install the brake pedal and spring assembly in vehicle. Torque pedal shaft nut to 41 N-m (30 ft.lbs.). For AC/AY Body, install stop lamp switch.

6. Ensure the spring is in the proper position (REMOVE THE TIE WRAP IF IT WAS USED), and verify the brake pedal is returning properly.

7. Attach the input rod to the brake pedal and install the supplied retainer clip onto the brake pedal pin.

8. Adjust the stop lamp switch as outlined in the appropriate service manual, and verify proper brake lamp operation and pedal return.
