C. Replace and/or Adjust the Striker Height
1. For 1984 through early 1988 model years only: Remove the liftgate opening sill trim. Mark the striker location on the sill and then replace the striker with the provided striker using two of the shim washers. Torque striker to 350 in-lbs (40 Nm).Note:
Make sure new striker is aligned with the location mark to ensure proper striker position.
Note:
Late 1988 through 1990 model year vehicles already have a striker with a head. DO NOT replace the striker on any vehicle that already has a striker with a head.
2. Apply white lube to the inside (striker) edge of the latch rotor (Figure 8).
3. Close and then reopen the liftgate.
4. Measure the distance on the liftgate latch striker from the top of the latch rotor white lube witness mark to the top of the black plastic portion of the striker (Figure 9).
5. If the distance is greater than 3/16" (4.5 mm), no striker height adjustment is required. Reinstall the sill trim (if removed) and continue with Step D.
6. If the distance is less than 3/16" (4.5 mm), adjust the striker as follows:
a. Remove the liftgate opening sill trim (if necessary).
b. Mark the location of the striker and then remove the striker.
c. Install two of the provided shim washers on the threaded portion of the striker.
IMPORTANT:
Do not use more than four (two on 1990) total shim washers.
d. Reinstall the striker. Torque to 350 in-lbs (40 Nm).
Note:
Make sure striker is aligned with the location mark to ensure proper striker position.
e. Reinstall the liftgate opening sill trim.
