4 Wheel Drive
Prior to engine removal, start engine, disconnect electric fuel pump connector and allow engine to run out of fuel to relieve residual fuel system pressure.WARNING: Failure to relieve fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components may cause fire or personal injury.
1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery, battery tray and battery tray support bracket.
2. Disconnect power steering and engine oil pressure switch connectors.
3. Disconnect alternator wiring, then remove the air cleaner.
4. Disconnect coil high tension lead, distributor wiring and engine ground strap from the firewall.
5. Remove windshield washer tank.
6. Disconnect power brake booster hose, then identify and remove all vacuum hoses and electrical connectors from engine.
7. Drain engine coolant into suitable container, then remove reservoir container.
8. Disconnect radiator upper and lower hoses from engine, then remove radiator assembly.
9. Disconnect heater hoses from engine, then the accelerator cable and speed control cable (if equipped) from carburetor.
10. Disconnect speedometer cable.
11. Discharge A/C system (if equipped), then disconnect A/C hoses from compressor. Cap all open ends of A/C system to prevent entry of dirt and foreign matter.
12. Disconnect power steering hose from pump, fuel return hose from carburetor and main fuel line at fuel filter.
13. Disconnect shift control cables from transaxle case, then raise and support vehicle.
14. Remove engine/transaxle lower protection plate and cover.
15. Drain transmission and transfer case oil into suitable container.
16. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from manifold.
17. Remove driveshaft, then the clutch slave cylinder. Disconnect clutch hydraulic tubes.
18. Remove front drive shafts as outlined, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints/Drive/Propeller Shaft/Service and Repair.
19. Remove transfer extension stopper bracket.
20. Lower vehicle to floor, then remove top engine to body coupling bracket nuts. Do not remove coupling bracket bolt at this time.
21. Remove select control valves from transaxle insulator bracket, then the transaxle mounting insulator nut. Do not remove bolt at this time.
22. Remove front roll insulator installation nut, then the rear insulator to engine coupling nut.
23. Remove front grille, bridge panel and A/C condenser, if equipped.
24. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment to engine/transaxle assembly, then lift engine/transaxle assembly enough to relieve pressure on engine mounts. Remove mounting bolts.
25. Remove engine/transaxle assembly from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
