Without Tilt
This steering column is designed to be serviced as an assembly. Only electrical switches may be serviced, refer to BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT in appropriate section for switch replacement procedures.REMOVAL
1. Position wheels straight forward.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. On models equipped with column shift, disconnect link rod by prying from shift lever grommet.
4. On all models, remove steering wheel pad, then disconnect electrical connectors.
5. Using tool No. C-3428-B or equivalent, remove steering wheel. Do not use hammer on steering column shaft to remove wheel, as damage may result.
6. Paint installation alignment marks at column shaft to coupler, then remove column to shaft attaching screws.
7. Disconnect floor plate to floor pan attaching screws.
8. Remove instrument panel lower column and fuse panel cover.
9. On models equipped with shift column, place shift lever in PARK, then disconnect shift cable.
10. On all models, remove tilt lever, if equipped.
11. Remove upper and lower lock housing shrouds, then remove fixed shrouds.
12. Using suitable 7 mm socket, remove multi-function switch.
13. Disconnect steering column electrical connectors.
14. Remove lower instrument panel and support bracket standoff attaching screws.
15. Carefully remove steering column through passenger compartment.
INSTALLATION
1. On models equipped with column shift, install shift lever grommet.
2. On all models, install ground clip on left capsule slot. Remove shipping lockpin located on lower column jacket. Install steering column through floor pan opening.
3. Align master splines on steering gear and shaft, then slide steering coupler to steering column and install roll pin.
4. Position column bracket slots on attaching studs, then loosely install upper bracket and washer nuts.
5. Clip steering column wiring harness to column, then install multi-function switch.
6. Install upper fixed shroud.
7. Ensure breakaway capsules are fully seated, then torque upper steering column support bracket nuts to 105 inch lbs.
8. Install floor plate attaching bolts.
9. Reconnect steering column electrical connectors, then install lower fixed shroud.
10. On models equipped with column shift, place shift lever in PARK position, then reconnect shift cable.
11. On all models, install lock housing shrouds.
12. Install tilt lever, if equipped.
13. Install lower instrument panel cover, then attach RWAL test connector.
14. Install steering wheel with master splines aligned, then torque attaching nut to 45 ft lb Do not force steering wheel on with heavy object, as damage may result.
15. On models equipped with column shift, connect shift link rod to shift lever. Ensure new grommet is installed on shift lever.
16. On all models, adjust transmission shift linkage.
17. Slowly move gear shift selector from low to park, ensuring indicator pointer alignment and smooth operation.
18. Connect battery ground cable, then test light and horn operation.
