A/T - Indicator Misalignment/Gear Overshoot
NO: 21-24-94GROUP: Transmission
DATE: Dec. 2, 1994
SUBJECT:
Shift Linkage Adjustment Procedure Revision
MODELS:
1994 - 1995 (BR) Ram Truck
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO RAM TRUCK VEHICLES BUILT WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
PRNDL misalignment and/or gear overshoot into the Drive 2 position can occur when shifting from park or neutral into the drive gate stop position.
DIAGNOSIS:
Shift the steering column lever rapidly from park into drive and against the drive gate stop. Notice if the PRNDL appears to be located partially between the D and D2 positions. Also, note if the transmission drive detent position aligns with the drive gate stop. If the detent position has been passed by when the column shift lever is in the drive gate position, then too much drive gate gap exists and the linkage must be adjusted.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin revises the shift linkage adjustment procedure.
1. Shift transmission into Park.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Check condition of shift rod, levers, grommets and torque shaft. Tighten, repair or replace worn or damaged parts.
4. Loosen lock bolt in front shift rod adjusting swivel.
5. Be sure front shift rod slides freely in swivel. Lube rod and swivel if necessary.
6. Verify that valve body shift control lever is in Park detent. Move lever fully rearward to check.
7. Adjust swivel position on the shift rod to obtain free pin fit in torque shaft lever.
8. Apply a 3 to 5 lb. upward pressure to the bottom of the front shift rod to remove the linkage lash in the steering column (see illustration).
9. While holding the pressure on the bottom of the rod, tighten the lock bolt to 100 in.lbs.
NOTE:
TOO MUCH PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ROD CAN CAUSE EXCESS NEUTRAL GATE GAP. THIS CAN CAUSE NO START IN NEUTRAL, GEAR OVERSHOOT INTO REVERSE, AND/OR A DIFFICULT IGNITION KEY REMOVAL. CHECK FOR THESE PROBLEMS AFTER PERFORMING THE MODIFIED LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT AND READJUST AGAIN IF NECESSARY. SPECIFICALLY CHECK TO ASSURE THAT SHIFT OVERSHOOT INTO REVERSE IS NOT POSSIBLE. CHECK FOR SHIFT OVERSHOOT BY RAPIDLY SHIFTING FROM THE D POSITION INTO THE N POSITION AND NOTING IF REVERSE GEAR IS ENGAGED WHEN THE SHIFT LEVER IS AGAINST THE N GATE STOP.
FAILURE TO REMOVE THE EXCESS DRIVE GATE GAP CAN ALLOW SHIFT OVERSHOOT INTO THE DRIVE 2 POSITION, PRNDL MISALIGNMENT, OR PARTIAL ACTIVATION OF THE DRIVE 2 CIRCUIT WHICH CAN CAUSE TRANSMISSION DURABILITY ISSUES.
10. Verify the PRNDL adjustment and readjust if necessary.
