DISCUSSION:
Oil seepage can occur at the speed sensor or speed sensor gear adaptor (speedometer adaptor), which is located at the transmission extension housing on two wheel drive vehicles or at the transfer case on four wheel drive vehicles. This seepage can occur at three areas. The first area is through the speed sensor internally. This condition was addressed with Technical Service Bulletin No. 21-14-94 which released a redesigned speed sensor with internal seals. This sensor, P/N 56027825, has been used in production since Nov. 1993 and is white in color. If seepage is present and oil is found inside the electrical connector on one of the older black sensors, the part will have to be replaced with the new sensor.

Two other conditions can be present. Seepage between the sensor 0-ring and the adaptor housing or seepage between the adaptor 0-ring and the transmission or transfer case housing. If either of these conditions are present, perform the repair procedure.
