Disc Brake System: Description and Operation
These vehicles employ Delco single piston sliding calipers. The most significant feature of single piston caliper operation is that the calipers are free to slide laterally on the mounting bolts. It is the freedom of lateral movement that allows continuous compensation for lining wear.Upon brake application, fluid pressure exerted against the caliper piston increases equally in all directions, creating the same pressure in the caliper bore and on the piston.
Pressure applied to the piston is transmitted directly to the inboard brake pad, forcing it against the inner surface of the rotor. At the same time, pressure in the bore forces the caliper to slide inward on the mounting bolts to bring the outboard brake pad into contact with the outer surface of the rotor. These actions create a simultaneous, even braking pressure on both sides of the rotor.
The calipers are attached directly to the steering knuckles by two pins and bolts.
