42RH, RE (A-500) & 46/47RH (A-518) 4-Speed
1. Ensure transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature (180°F). It may be necessary to drive vehicle and allow transmission to shift through all gear ranges in order to warm fluid properly.
2. With vehicle on a level surface, lock parking brake and run engine at curb idle speed.
3. Shift transmission through each gear range momentarily, then place selector lever in Neutral position.
4. Wipe dirt or grease away from filler/dipstick tube orifice, then remove and inspect dipstick, noting the following:
a. Fluid level is correct if it is within crosshatched area between MIN dot and MAX fill arrow on dipstick.
b. If fluid level is low, add only enough fluid to bring level into crosshatched area.
c. If fluid level is high or if an overfill occurs, remove fluid through filler tube using 1/8-3/16 inch tubing and a suitable suction gun.
5. Inspect fluid color and condition, noting the following:
a. Fluid color should range between dark red and pink. Orange, brown or black fluid, sometimes accompanied by a burned odor, indicates transmission service is necessary.
b. Fluid should be free of particles and sludge. If such contaminants are present, further transmission service is required.
