Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.2. Release fuel pressure as outlined under "Fuel System Pressure Relief" in Precautions.
3. Remove alternator, then the air cleaner and fuel lines.
4. On 1992 5.9L/V8-360 engine, remove throttle body vacuum control hoses.
5. On all engines, disconnect accelerator linkage and cables for speed control and transmission kickdown.
6. On all engines except 8.0L/V10-488, remove distributor cap with spark plug wires attached, then disconnect coil wires.
7. On 8.0L/V10-488 engine, remove coil pack and bracket, then disconnect coil wires.
8. On all engines, disconnect heat indicator sending unit electrical connector.
9. Remove heater hoses and bypass hose.
10. Remove closed crankcase ventilation system, evaporation control system and cylinder head covers.
11. Remove intake manifold and throttle body as outlined under "Intake Manifold, Replace," then remove exhaust manifolds as outlined under "Exhaust Manifold, Replace."
12. On 1992 5.9L/V8-360 engine, remove rocker shaft assemblies and pushrods. Mark for installation reference.
13. On 1992 3.9L/V6-238 and 5.2L/V8-318 engines and all 1993-96 engines, remove rocker arm assemblies and pushrods. Mark for installation reference.
14. remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head. Discard gasket.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On 3.9L/V6-238, 5.2L/V8-318 & 5.9L/V8-360 engines, torque bolts in sequence in two steps, first to 50 ft-lbs then to 105 ft-lbs.
