A. Replace Vapor Canister and Purge Solenoid

1. With the ignition key in the OFF position disconnect the battery.

Note:
To enhance customer satisfaction remember to record all radio settings before disconnecting the battery and to reset all electronic memory (clock radio settings etc.) when you have completed the service procedure.

2. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the throttle body.





3. Disconnect the vapor purge hose from the engine throttle body (Figure 1).





4. Disconnect the purge solenoid electrical connector (Figure 2).

5. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the purge solenoid (Figure 2).

6. Remove and discard the purge solenoid (Figure 2).

7. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.





8. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the vapor canister (Figure 3).

NOTE:
Mark vacuum hoses to insure correct reassembly.

9. Remove and discard the vapor canister (Figure 3).





10. Disconnect the vapor hose from the fuel tank rollover valve (Figure 4).

11. With compressed air thoroughly clean the canister-to-rollover valve hose the canister purge hose and the canister signal hose (94/95 model year only).

NOTE:
The evaporative system must be free of all loose carbon particles or the new purge solenoid may become stuck in the open position.

12. Install the new canister assembly in the bracket. Rotate the canister until the hose fittings are in a horizontal position (Figure 3). Tighten the bracket bolt to 95 in-lbs (10 N.m).

13. Connect the vapor hoses to the canister (Figure 3).

14. Connect the vapor hose to the fuel tank roll over valve (Figure 4).

15. Lower the vehicle.

16. With compressed air thoroughly clean the purge solenoid-to-throttle body vacuum hose.

17. Inspect the throttle body purge port. Insert a thin wire into the throttle body purge port to make sure that there are no carbon particles (restrictions) present.

18. Connect the purge hose to the throttle body (Figure 1).

19. Install the new purge solenoid (Figure 2).

NOTE:
The 1996 model year purge solenoid is marked "UP" on the housing to denote the proper orientation. Make sure that it is properly positioned.

20. Connect the vacuum hoses to the purge solenoid (Figure 2).

21. Connect the purge solenoid electrical connector (Figure 2).

22. Install the air cleaner assembly.

23. Connect the negative battery cable.
