DISTRIBUTOR CAP REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and the distributor wiring harness connector.
2. Remove the splash shield retaining screws, and the splash shield.
3. Remove distributor cap retaining screws, and distributor cap.
DISTRIBUTOR REMOVAL
1. Rotate engine so rotor points toward block, and mark block for reference.
2. Remove distributor hold down bolt, and carefully remove distributor.
DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION
- If the engine has been cranked, with distributor removed, proceed to FINDING TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) below.
- If the engine has not been cranked, with distributor removed, use the following procedure:
1. Install new 0-ring on distributor.
2. Position distributor in engine and carefully engage distributor drive gear so rotor points to mark on block.
3. Install hold down bolt, (finger tight).
CAP INSTALLATION
1. Install distributor cap, (make sure all wires are snapped firmly in towers).
2. Install splash shield and connect distributor wiring harness connector.
3. Connect negative battery cable, and set timing. SEE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
FINDING TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC)
1. Remove the number one spark plug. While blocking the plug hole with a finger, rotate crankshaft until number one piston is at top of compression stroke (air in cylinder will escape around finger tip). Pointer on bell housing should line up with the "0" TDC mark on flywheel.
2. Rotate the rotor to a position just ahead of the number one distributor cap terminal.
3. Install the distributor so that with the distributor fully seated, the rotor is under the number one tower of the distributor cap.
4. Install the distributor hold down bolt, (finger tight).
5. Proceed to CAP INSTALLATION above.
