4 Speed Automatic

The transaxle and converter must be removed as an assembly to prevent damage to the torque converter driveplate, pump bushing and oil seal.

NOTE: The driveplate will not support a load. Do not allow the weight of the transaxle to rest on the driveplate.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then detach shift control linkage.
2. Install an engine support fixture across top of engine compartment, then remove bellhousing upper bolts.
3. Remove front stub axle cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer, then loosen front hub nut and wheel nuts.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then remove hub nut, washer and front wheels.
5. Remove left splash shield.
6. Remove speedometer adapter, cable and pinion as an assembly.
7. Remove sway bar.
8. Remove both lower ball joint to steering knuckle bolts, then pry lower ball joint from steering knuckle.
9. Separate outer CV joint splined shaft from hub by holding CV housing while moving steering knuckle assembly away. Do not pry on or damage CV joint sleeve.
10. Remove both driveshafts, supporting both joints at housing.
11. Remove torque converter dust cover, then mark torque converter and driveplate for reference during assembly.
12. Remove torque converter attaching bolts, then disconnect electrical connectors at transmission range switch and neutral safety switch.
13. Remove front engine mount insulator and bracket.
14. On models with direct ignition system, remove crankshaft position sensor from bell housing.
15. On all models, remove starter.
16. Position transmission jack under transaxle, then remove left engine mount.
17. Carefully lower transaxle from vehicle.
18. Reverse procedure to install.
