NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 41TE OR 42LE TRANSAXLE BUILT BEFORE MAR. 18, 1996 (TRANSAXLE IDENTIFICATION CODE NUMBER XXX-2652-XXXX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicle shudders during light to moderate throttle 1-2 upshifts.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure Manual and Supplement if applicable, verify all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
Test drive the vehicle on a smooth road surface. If the vehicle shudders during 1-2 upshifts with light to moderate throttle application, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
4 4799860AA Disc, 2-4 Clutch
4 4659054 Plate, Separator
AR (1) 4882934 Package, Seal and Gasket 4ITE
AR (1) 4882919 Package, Seal and Gasket 42LE
AR 4798233 Fluid, Automatic Transmission (Type 7176)
AR (1) 4864505 Filter, 41TE
AR (1) 4796730 Filter, 42LE
AR (1) 4446620 Piston, 2-4 Accumulator
AR (2) 4446544 Ring, Teflon Seal
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the 2-4 clutch separator plates, installing revised 2-4 clutch discs and revised seals.
NOTE:
DO NOT RE-USE ANY OF THE SEALS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED IN THE TRANSAXLE.
1. Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, remove the transaxle from the vehicle and install the appropriate parts specified in the Parts Required section of this bulletin.
2. Inspect the 2-4 accumulator piston. If it is made of plastic, replace it with an aluminum piston (P/N 4446620) and 2 teflon seal rings (P/N 4446544).
3. When installing the replacement 2-4 clutch plates and discs, the plate orientation should be alternated so the pilot pads of adjacent plates do not align, refer to the illustration.
4. During the re-assembly, be sure to check and adjust as necessary all clutch clearances. For this repair, the preferred Low/Reverse clutch clearance is between 0.89 mm (.035 in.) and 1.04 mm (.042 in.).
5. The seals used for the low/reverse clutch piston and 2/4 clutch piston have been revised to D-ring type seals. Under NO circumstances, use a lip type seal for these applications.
6. If friction material was found in the transaxle oil pan or the oil pump assembly, reverse flush and flow check the oil cooler and tubes using Miller Tool 6906 (follow the instructions provided with the tool).
7. Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, re-assemble and install the transaxle into vehicle then adjust the transaxle fluid level.
8. Check for and erase any Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTC'S using the MDS or DRB III before proceeding with the quick learn procedure.
NOTE:
FAILURE TO PERFORM THE QUICK LEARN PROCEDURE CAN RESULT IN A LOW MILEAGE TRANSAXLE FAILURE OR POOR INITIAL SHIFT QUALITY.
9. Perform the quick learn procedure for the TCM:
A. Ensure the transmission fluid level is correct.
B. Start vehicle, place the shift lever in Overdrive (OD), move the vehicle at least five feet with the engine running and then place shifter in Neutral (N). Apply the parking brake and let the engine idle. This purges the air in the clutch circuits to prevent erroneous clutch volume values which could cause poor initial shift quality or a low mileage transaxle failure.
C. Using the DRB III select the 1994 - 1997 Diagnostics option (1) and choose Transmissions.
D. Choose the Trans Overhauled/Replaced option and follow the instructions on the DRB III screen.
E. After performing quick learn read Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and TCM DTC'S. If only DTC 12 exists, erase the DTC. If there are other DTC'S, perform the proper diagnostics for those DTC'S.
