2/4 Accumulator Piston Replacement

1994 through 1996 year models with the 41TE or the 42LE transaxle may come equipped with a plastic 2/4 accumulator piston in the valve body (figure 1). This piston has been known to leak, causing a shift to fail-safe, or "limp" mode. There may also be DTC 36, 52 or 54 in memory as a result.

If a plastic 2/4 accumulator piston is encountered during any type of service, it must be replaced with the previous version aluminum piston.

The aluminum 2/4 accumulator piston is available from the local Chrysler dealer under part number 4446620. The two teflon seal rings for the piston are available under part number 4446544.

It is advisable to recondition the accumulator bore in the valve body by thoroughly smoothing the bore surface using a Scotchbrite(TM) pad, or equivalent.
