Neutral-Safety and PRNODL Switch Check

Most transmissions use the position of the manual control valve to determine the number of forward gears that are available. The 41TE, however, has only three manual valve positions, OD/D/L Neutral/Park, and Reverse (figure 1). Because of this, shift strategy on the 41TE is determined by signals from the PRNODL and Neutral-Safety switches (figure 2).

An improper signal from these switches can cause many problems with upshift scheduling, as well as a long delay in reverse. Therefore, it is important to check the signals from these switches during any major service.

If a problem with the switch signal is suspected, it is far more practical to install two new switches and re-road test the unit to see if the problem is gone.

Although the shifter in these vehicles has six positions, the valve body rooster comb has seven. There is an extra position beyond manual low that is used to hold the park rod in place while removing or installing the valve body, it is called the installation position. Do not inadvertently consider this to be the manual low position. The shifter position chart shows this to be position "1".
