41TE (A604) Underdrive Clutch Piston Outer Lip Seal Change

Several changes to the design of the input drum assembly occurred in 1990. One change was in the underdrive clutch piston outer lip seal. The cross-section of the seal was reduced in width (figure 1). Because of this, the groove inside the input drum was made more shallow to properly support the new size seal.

Since most gasket and seal kits include both the early and late seals, care must be taken to assure the use of the correct seal. The seal can be identified by either the part number formed inside the early seal lip or by measuring the width of the top of the seal (figure 1).

To identify which seal fits the drum being used, check the overdrive/underdrive pressure plate snap ring groove area of the input drum (figure 2). If the rib between the snap ring grooves is approximately .125" then it is an early drum, which requires the thick seal. If the rib is approximately .085" then it is the late drum, which requires the thin seal.
