61 Inadequate Element Volume: 2-4
THEORY OF OPERATION:
The volumes of the transmission fluid needed to apply the friction elements are continuously monitored and learned for adaptive controls. As friction material wears, the volume of fluid needed to apply the element increases. The following are typical clutch volumes (the clutches may be damaged if the volumes are greater than the volumes shown below):
- LR: 35 - 83
- OD: 48 - 150
- 2-4: 20 - 77
- UD: 24 - 70
Certain transmission mechanical problems such as broken return springs, out of position snap rings, clutch pack clearance(s) out of specification, other misassembly, etc. can cause near-zero learned volumes resulting in setting the appropriate code.
LIMP-IN:
NO
WHEN MONITORED/SET CONDITIONS:
When doing a 1 -2 shift. Transmission temperature above 80°F (110°F for 97 MY). The appropriate code is set in less than 1 second if the updated learned volume is below a threshold value.
- UD - When doing a 4-3 or 4-2 shift. Transmission temperature above 80°F. (110°F for 97MY) (does not set an inadequate volume code).
TRANSMISSION EFFECTS:
All MY's and calibrations - normal operation with no limp-in mode.
POSSIBLE CAUSES:
- Clutch pack clearance out of specification.
- Snap ring out of position.
- Broken return spring.
- Hydraulic leak into clutch circuit with near-zero volume.
