Remote Keyless Entry - Intermittently Inoperative

NO: 08-16-97

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Apr. 4, 1997

SUBJECT:
Inoperative Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)

MODELS:
1995-1997 (AB) Ram Van/Wagon

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A SINGLE REAR CARGO DOOR.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The power door locks function normally when using the power door lock switches but operate intermittently or are inoperative when using the transmitter for the RKE system.

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Remove the rear cargo door trim panel. Refer to the 1997 Ram Van/Wagon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-7107), page 23-45 for information regarding rear cargo door trim panel removal.

2. Inspect the power door lock actuator contact wiring access opening in the hinge reinforcement bracket for possible contact between the terminals of the actuator contacts to the hinge reinforcement bracket (Figure 1). There should be at least 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) clearance between the terminals and the hinge reinforcement bracket.

3. If there is less than 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) clearance between the terminals and hinge reinforcement, perform the Repair Procedure. If the clearance is 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) or greater, the power door lock/RKE system will require further diagnosis. Use the procedures described in the 1997 Ram Van/Wagon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-7107), pages 8P-2 through 8P-4 for diagnostic procedures regarding the power door lock/RKE system.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 J8993799 Rustproofing And Sealant

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves enlarging the opening in the hinge reinforcement bracket for the wiring access to the power door lock actuator contacts.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

2. Disconnect the power door lock actuator contacts from the wiring harness noting the wire orientation to the contact for proper re-assembly.

3. With a file or small die grinder, remove approximately 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) of material from the rear door hinge reinforcement (Figure 2).

CAUTION:
DO NOT REMOVE ANY MATERIAL FROM THE OUTER SHEET METAL (EXTERIOR SURFACE). MATERIAL SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE (INNER SHEET METAL) DOOR HINGE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET ONLY.

4. Touch up the repair area with MOPAR Rustproofing And Sealant (p/n J8993799).

5. Connect the wire harness to the power door lock actuator contacts. Make sure the wire harness is properly attached to the contacts by referring to the wire harness orientation as noted in step 2.

6. Install the power door lock actuator contacts into the opening on the door hinge face plate.

7. Install the rear cargo door trim panel. Refer to the 1997 Ram Van/Wagon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-7107), pages 23-45 and 23-46 for information regarding rear cargo door trim panel installation.

8. Close the rear cargo door.

9. Connect the battery negative cable.

10. Reset the clock in the radio.

11. With the RKE transmitter, lock and unlock the doors.

12. The repair is complete if the RKE system can lock and unlock the doors. If the doors still do not lock and unlock properly using the RKE transmitter, the power door lock/RKE system will require further diagnosis. Use the procedures described in the 1997 Ram Van/Wagon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-7107), pages 8P-2 through 8P-4 for diagnostic procedures regarding the power door lock/RKE system.
