Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

General Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The airbag system is designed to provide increased driver and passenger protection if the vehicle is involved in a front-end collision. The system is most effective when used in conjunction with the seat belt system, but it will operate and provide a reduced measure of protectin even without seat belts being used.

For 1994-95 AS body and 1994-1/2 - 95 LH vehicles: A new hybrid passenger side airbag assembly will be introduced. This bag assembly utilizes a canister of a compressed, inert gas to inflate the bag instead of sodium azide. The pressure of the canister is monitored by a non-serviceable pressure switch, which is built into the canister. The pressure switch is wired to and monitored by the airbag control module.

For 1994-1/2 LH vehicles: The airbag control module will change part numbers at mid-year when the hybrid passenger airbag is introduced; it is not interchangeable with the previous part number. This is because of the addition of the hybrid bag pressure switch input.

Currently, Chrysler Corporation uses two types of airbag control modules. The ASDM system is a mechanically-triggered system utilizing two front impact sensors and a sensor inside the module. The AECM (AB, AS and JA bodies only) is an electronically-triggered system that uses only its own internal electronic sensor to trigger the airbags. These procedures will address both types modules; the term "airbag control module" (or ACM) will be used to refer to both modules.
