Steering Gear: Description and Operation
Exploded View Of Variable Ratio Type Power Steering Gear:
This steering gear incorporates the recirculating ball system. Steel balls riding in helical grooves act as a rolling thread between the steering gear wormshaft and the rack piston. Teeth on the side of the rack piston mesh with the sector shaft. The control valve is housed inside the steering gear housing itself, making the need for an externally mounted valve assembly unnecessary.
If the hydraulic pressure in the steering system should fail, the driver, by using more effort on the steering wheel, can control the vehicle manually.
