Tire/Wheel Assembly - Match Mounting

NO: 22-06-95

GROUP: Wheels & Tires

DATE: Jun. 16, 1995

SUBJECT:
Match Mounting of Tire/Wheel Assemblies During Wheel Service

MODELS:
1995 (BR) Ram Truck
1995 (AN) Dakota
1995 (AB) Ram Van/Wagon

Note
THIS PROCESS MUST BE PERFORMED ON ALL VEHICLES THAT ARE CURRENTLY RECEIVING CERTIFICATES FOR CHROME WHEELS FROM THE ASSEMBLY PLANT.

DISCUSSION:

The following information is provided for use when matching a new wheel to an existing tire. The tire and wheel assemblies on some Dodge trucks and vans are being marked for match mounting. This provides for improved ride characteristics and is being phased in on all truck wheels. This bulletin provides a procedure to mark and match mount tires during wheel service/replacement when the factory tire mark/sticker is no longer present.

IDENTIFICATION:

Michelin tires are marked with a florescent yellow sticker on the tire sidewall. Goodyear tire sidewalls were marked with a paint dot prior to mid-February 1995 and now have a similar sticker as the Michelin tires.

Note
THESE TIRE MARKINGS ARE EASILY REMOVED AND MAY NOT BE PRESENT FOLLOWING DEALER NEW CAR PREP.

New wheels are marked with a temporary florescent yellow sticker on the wheel flange and in the wheel well with an permanent "X" (Figure 2).

TIRE MARKING/MATCH MOUNTING PROCEDURE:

1. It is extremely important that prior to dismounting the old tire and wheel assembly, a mark be made showing exactly where the tire is mounted on the wheel. A mark should be applied across the wheel flange and the tire sidewall (Figure 1).

2. Dismount the tire from the wheel. Place the wheel on top of the front face of the tire, aligning the mark made in step 1 (Figure 2).

3. Transfer the "X" in the wheel well to the front face of the tire with a marker (Figure 2).

4. If the florescent wheel sticker is not present on the new wheel, locate the stamped X" in the wheel well and transfer its location to the wheel flange with a mark prior to mounting.

5. When mounting this tire to the new wheel, align the mark made in step three with the florescent sticker on the wheel or the mark made in step 4.

6. Dynamically balance the tire and wheel assembly and install on the vehicle.
