Repair Procedure

This bulletin involves the replacement of the rear brake shoes, rear wheel cylinders and if not already equipped the installation of additional brake shoe springs.

1. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

2. Remove the rear wheel/tire assemblies.

3. Remove the brake drums.

**4. Peel back the edge of both boots on a revised wheel cylinder (p/n 04883830AA) to dislodge the boots from grooves in wheel cylinder casting. Remove boots and attached pistons from wheel cylinder.

CAUTION:
THE WHEEL CYLINDER LUBRICANT SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE IN THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE SYSTEM OTHER THAN AS DESCRIBED IN THIS TSB.

5. Apply lubricant liberally to surfaces of pistons and inside the bore of the wheel cylinder without disturbing the rubber cup seals. Ignore any light rust due to shelf storage which may be visible. Do not confuse traces of assembly fluid from the factory with brake fluid leakage.

6. Install the pistons and boots to the wheel cylinder. Make sure the boots seal properly onto the casting groove all the way around the wheel cylinder. With your fingers, shuttle pistons back and forth in bore to distribute lubricant. Do not allow the boots to become dislodged from wheel cylinder casting groove.

7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the other revised wheel cylinder.

NOTE:
INSURE THE WHEEL CYLINDER IS SEALED TO THE BACKING PLATE WITH RTV (p/n 04318025).**

8. Replace the rear brake shoes with brake shoe kit (P/N 04883833AA) and the rear wheel cylinders with revised wheel cylinders (P/N 04883830AA) using the procedures outlined starting on page 5-32 of the 1997 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No 81-370-7105).

9. As required, install additional brake shoe spring (P/N 04238730) below the bottom anchor into the slots provided in the brake shoes as shown in Figure 1.

10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the other side rear brake assembly.

11. Install the original brake drums unless the condition of the drums warrants replacement.

NOTE:
DO NOT TURN THE ORIGINAL OR REPLACEMENT DRUMS.

12. Adjust the rear brakes using procedure outlined on page 5-74 of the 1997 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-7105).

NOTE:
INSURE ALL (3) INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT PLUGS (p/n 04238721) ARE PRESENT IN THE BACKING PLATE.

13. Install the rear wheel/tire assemblies.

14. Lower the vehicle.
