Recall - VECI Label Wrong: Overview

No.: 672

July, 1997

To: All Dodge Truck Dealers

Subject:
Emissions Recalls # 672 and # 673 -- VECI Label Replacement

Models:
1996 Model Year Dodge Ram Vans and Wagons (AB) Equipped With a 3.9L or 5.2L Engine ("X" or "Y" in the 8th VIN Position), Built From September 26, 1995 Through December 1, 1995 (MDH 092610 Through 120107) With a:

^ Recall # 672 -- Federal Emission Control System (Sales Code -- NAA)

^ Recall # 673 -- California Emission Control System (Sales Code -- NAE)

The Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label installed on the above listed vehicles specifies incorrect engine family and emission system barcode information. The label identifies the engine family and emission system configuration for vehicle emission testing. As a result, an incorrect label may cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. To correct this condition, a new VECI label must be installed.

Replacement labels are being mailed directly to owners. The owners are requested to install the labels themselves or, if preferred, to arrange for dealer installation of the owner-supplied label without charge.

Dealer Notification & Vehicle List

All dealers will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail. Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a list of their involved vehicles. The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

DIAL System Functions 53, 70 and VIP

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Functions 53, 70 and VIP at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry as needed.

Function 53 provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of incomplete vehicles. The customer name, address and phone number is listed if known. Parts information is also provided. Complete vehicles are removed from Function 53 within several days of repair claim submission. To use this system, type "53" at the "ENTER FUNCTION" prompt, then type "ORD672" or "ORD673".

Parts

Important:
Correct VECI labels are being mailed directly to owners. Additional VECI labels may be ordered as needed to support customer demand.

If the owner does not have the label that was enclosed with the owner notification, dealers should determine which label is required for each vehicle at the time appointments are scheduled. The label for the vehicle to be serviced may be determined by:

^ Using the part code in the third column of the VIN list along with the table above (involved dealers),

^ Using VIN and part number list electronically transmitted to DIAL System Function 53 (involved dealers) or

^ Entering the VIN to DIAL System Function 69 or VIP (sales code information) along with the table above (all dealers).

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to install the supplied VECI label over the incorrect label on their vehicle. Any owner who prefers not to install the label, is asked to schedule an appointment for the service with their dealer. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.
