Recall - OBD II Catalyst Monitor Non-Functional: Overview

No. 726

October, 1997

To: All California Dodge Dealers

Subject:
California Emissions Recall # 726 -- Rear Oxygen Sensor Wiring

Models:
All 1996 Model Year Dodge Viper GTS (SR-29) Coupes Currently Located In California

NOTE:
Vehicles currently located outside California will be serviced under Emissions Recall # 725

The left and right downstream oxygen sensor wiring on the above listed vehicles, may have been routed incorrectly. This may cause the catalyst monitor to be non-functional or may illuminate the MIL light. To correct this condition, the rear oxygen sensors must be inspected for proper operation and the wiring must be rerouted as necessary.

Important:
This recall is subject to the State of California Registration Renewal/Emissions Recall Enforcement Program. Involved vehicles must have the recall service completed before registration renewal.

The servicing dealer must provide a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form (Form No. 81-016-1053) to each owner upon completion of the recall service, for use as proof in renewal of the vehicle registration.

Dealer Notification & Vehicle List

All dealers will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail. Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a list of their involved vehicles. The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

DIAL System Functions 53, 70 and VIP

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Functions 53, 70 and VIP at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry as needed.

Function 53 provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of incomplete vehicles. The customer name, address and phone number is listed if known. Parts information is also provided. Completed vehicles are removed from Function 53 within several days of repair claim submission. To use this system, type "53" at the "ENTER FUNCTION" prompt, then type "ORD726".

Authorized Modifications Label Requirement

There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. Refer to the Parts and Service Procedure sections of this letter for details.

Parts

Important:
Due to the small number of involved vehicles and the likelihood that the required tie straps are already in your parts inventory, no tie straps will be distributed initially to dealers.

Dealers may order tie strap PN 6015756 or PN 4641780 as needed to support customer demand. Two (2) tie straps are required for each vehicle.

Each involved dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address), will receive ten (10) Authorized Modifications labels (included with the vehicle list). Dealers may order additional Authorized Modifications labels, PN 04275086, as needed, to support customer demand. One (1) label is required for each vehicle.

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for this service with their dealers. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.
