A/C Compressor - Moaning Noise at 2,000 RPM

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.2L OR 3.5L ENGINE.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Audible compressor moan occurring with the compressor clutch engaged and engine running at 2000 RPM.
DIAGNOSIS:
If compressor moan can be reproduced with engine at 2000 RPM, remove compressor mounting bolt "A" (rear upper fastener, Figure 1): If moan is significantly reduced or eliminated, perform the Repair Procedure.
If compressor moan still exists, reinstall bolt "A". Tighten bolt to 23 to 34 Nm (200 to 300 in.lbs.). Remove compressor mounting bolt "3" (rear lower fastener, Figure 1) and retest. If moan is significantly reduced or eliminated, perform the Repair Procedure.
If compressor moan is still present this bulletin does not apply and further diagnosis will be required to determine source of noise.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves modifying the compressor mounting bracket.
1. Open hood.
2. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
3. Remove compressor drive belt.
4. Remove the air cleaner housing and frame rail air cleaner housing mounting stud.
5. Remove compressor mounting bolts and move compressor with A/C plumbing attached away from compressor mounting bracket.
6. Remove compressor mounting bracket.
7. File 2 mm off A/C bracket boss "B" and remove threads in bracket with a 9 mm (3/8 in.) drill bit (Figure 1).
8. Install compressor mounting bracket to engine. Tighten bolts to 41 to 68 Nm (30 to 50 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the compressor to the mounting bracket with three bolts Tighten to 23 to 34 Nm (200 to 300 in. lbs.).
NOTE:
DO NOT INSTALL BOLT "B", FIGURE 1.
10. Install compressor drive belt. Set tension at 100 to 120 Lbs.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.
