A/T - Shift Schedule Changes/Enhancements

NO: 21-01-98

GROUP: Transmission

DATE: Feb. 13, 1998

SUBJECT:
Shift Schedule Changes/Enhancements

MODELS:

1998 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus/Breeze
1998 (JX) Sebring Convertible
1998 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid

DISCUSSION:

Transaxle software refinements were implemented with the launch of the above vehicle models. With these refinements came changes in transaxle performance as compared with previous model years. Following is a description of the changes:

All Listed Models:

1. The 4-3 coast down shift point was moved to a higher speed. For 1998 the speed at which this occurs is 30 mph. This higher coast down point allows the transaxle to achieve a lower gear quicker, thus improving overall performance. Although this change increases overall performance, some customers may notice engine braking on the coast down due to it occurring at a higher speed and RPM.

2. On certain kick down conditions, Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch (EMCC) will be delayed to increase performance especially when making passing maneuvers. For standard transaxles (non-autostick) after a 4-3 kick down from D to 3 (as long as the vehicle stays in 3rd) there will be approximately a 6 second delay before EMCC is applied. For autostick applications, on a 4 to 3 downshift there will be approximately a 10 second delay before EMCC application.

3. When in the 3 position, EMCC can be achieved at approximately 42 mph.

On 2.0L JA

1. The amount of throttle needed to achieve low speed kick downs was reduced.

2. Kick downs into 1st can be achieved up to approximately 32 mph.

3. Wide open throttle 1-2 upshifts have been moved to 6200 rpm and 2-3 wide open throttle upshifts now occur at 6000 rpm.

4. The speed for a 3-2 kick down has been increased to 62 mph.

On 2.4/2.5L JA/JX

1. The amount of throttle needed to achieve low speed kick downs has been reduced.
