NO: 08-35-97GROUP: Electrical
DATE: Sep. 26, 1997
SUBJECT:
Dead Battery From Ignition Off Draw (IOD)
MODELS:
1998 (BR/BE) Ram Truck
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Battery goes dead due to the glove box lamp remaining illuminated when the glove box door is closed.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Perform the Ignition-Off Draw (IOD) Test as described in the 1998 Ram Truck Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-8108), pages 8A-10 and 8A-11.
2. If after three minutes of performing the IOD test, the reading on the ammeter exceeds twenty-five milliamperes (0.025 ampere), disconnect fuse 12 (10 amp fuse) from the junction block.
3. If the reading on the ammeter still exceeds twenty-five milliamperes (0.025 ampere), further diagnosis will be required. Continue with the diagnosis described in the 1998 Ram Truck Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-8108), pages 8A-10 and 8A-11. If the reading on the ammeter is now below twenty-five milliamperes (0.025 ampere), perform the following Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
2 06100876 Spacer, Metal
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing 2 spacers between the glove box lamp switch bracket and the instrument panel glove box opening upper reinforcement.
WARNING:
REFER TO THE 1998 RAM TRUCK SERVICE MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-370-8108) GROUP 8M, FOR INFORMATION REGARDING PROPER AIRBAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN SERVICING ANY COMPONENTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
1. Record the radio station presets.
2. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. On vehicles equipped with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine, disconnect and isolate both battery negative cables.
3. While securing the glove box door with one hand, push the center of the glove box bin towards the front of the vehicle (Figure 1). Flex the glove box bin far enough so that the glove box stops on each side of the bin will clear the sides of the instrument panel glove box opening.
4. Roll the glove box downward until the stop bumpers are beyond the sides of the instrument panel glove box opening, then release the bin.
5. Lift the bottom of the glove box upward to disengage the three glove box hinge hooks from the three hinge pins on the instrument panel.
6. Remove the three screws that secure the trim strip to the glove box opening upper reinforcement (Figure 2) and remove the trim strip.
7. Remove the screw just above the glove box lamp and switch that secures the lamp and switch bracket to the instrument panel glove box opening upper reinforcement.
8. Place two (2) spacers, p/n 06100876, between the plastic bracket and the glove box opening upper reinforcement. Secure the bracket with the screw.
9. Install the trim strip onto the glove box opening upper reinforcement. Secure the trim strip with the three screws.
10. Attach the three glove box hooks to the three hinge pins on the instrument panel.
11. Install the glove box bin into the glove box opening of the instrument panel.
12. Attach the battery negative cable(s).
13. Reset the radio to the presets recorded in step one and reprogram the clock.
