Clicking Noise Coming From Steering Column Shroud When Gear Selector Is Operated

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES **BUILT BEFORE DEC. 1, 1997 (MDH1201XX)** EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Clicking sound coming from the steering column shroud when the gear selector is operated. Customers may also complain that the black gap-hider that slides along with the gear selector has popped out of the shroud.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the black gap-hider that is attached to the shift lever to ensure that the gap-hider is properly installed into the shroud. If the black gap-hider has popped out of the shroud, perform the following Repair Procedure. If the black gap-hider is properly installed, with the service brake applied, turn the key to the ON position and move the gear selector through all of the gear ranges. If a clicking sound is heard while moving the gear selector through all of the gear ranges, perform the following Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 5CT42JX8AC Shroud, Steering Column Lower
1 5CE58JX8AB Shroud, Steering Column Upper

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the upper and lower steering column shrouds with revised parts.

1. If the vehicle is equipped with a tilt steering column, remove the tilt lever by turning the lever counterclockwise.





2. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds from the steering column (Figure 1).

3. Install the upper steering column shroud, p/n 5CE58JXSAB, and the lower steering column shroud, p/n 5CT42JX8AC, onto the steering column.

4. If equipped, install the tilt lever onto the steering column.
